About us

Who we are

Fair Trade Jordan was brought to life in 2005, by a unique alliance between two local Jordanian and one international NGO; the Jordan Hashemite Fund for Human Development, the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature and IUCN-World Conservation Union.

During 2005 and 2006 the alliance worked closely with local producers through fair trade markets, promoting the ethics of fair trade to both the producers and consumers.

During the second quarter of 2006, seed funding from the British Embassy and the unique alliance paved the way towards the development of a fully independent fair trade entity. Fair Trade Jordan was registered as a private non-profit organization at the beginning of 2007, with the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

Our fair trade principles

  • Fair wages
  • Equal opportunities for all
  • Respects the rights of children
  • Locally resourced where possible
  • Sustainable use of natural resources and a minimal environmental footprint
  • Appropriate health and safety standards
  • Respect and where possible, promote Jordanian traditions and culture

What we do

Branding fair trade

FTJ seeks to become the leading national certifier on fair trade standards which include fair wages, gender equality and environmental performance.

Developing markets

Producers and service providers disadvantaged by the nature of the Jordanian trading system miss out on market opportunities for reasons related to income and market accessibility. FTJ looks to become the marketing arm for fair trade producers and service providers to ensure long term market access and fair distribution of trading benefits.

Providing access to opportunities

Without a sound enabling environment, the benefits of certification and market access are marginal. FTJ looks to facilitate and connect producers and service providers to existing national schemes that technically and financially support their businesses.

Ensuring an adequate governance structure

FTJ recognizes the need to create a robust and adequate governance structure that ensures an appropriate internal and external environment and adequately maintains relations with all concerned stakeholders.

Who we serve

FTJ intends to serve the following entities:

Any legally registered NGO, Cooperative, Private Company or Association that manufacture products or provides services and has a desire to adhere to fair trade standards and a strong ethical purpose. The character of a legally registered entity will differ according to the sectors at hand.

FTJ intends to cooperate with the following entities:

Large private operators, national associations and the Jordanian government, with the intention to: (1) mainstream ethical operations in the private sector and national policy; and (2) subsidies the activities of disadvantaged producers and service providers and FTJ.
